Xylometazoline hydrochloride is a popular and widely used active decongestant ingredient in a number of over-the-counter nasal
products. Most recently, this agent has been available since July 2010 as a pharmaceutical substance for the preparation of medicines,
which provides us with a directly-acting alpha-sympathomimetic agent stable in an aqueous environment. The review article provides
information on the properties and use of the substance applied in products for nasal and/or ophthalmic administration. Also presented
are examples of combined products particularly intended for nasal administration which can add to the current supply of proprietary
medicinal products and be used not only in adults and young children but also in infants.
