The article deals with the classification, diagnosis, and, in particular, treatment of functional dyspepsia. Both classification by the Czech
school of functional gastrointestinal disorders and the recent Rome III classification are presented. The diagnostic recommendations
presented are based on the current Rome criteria mentioned above. In treating functional dyspepsia, emphasis is placed on the comprehensiveness
of pharmacological and nonpharmacological approach, including psychological and psychiatric evaluation. In medication
therapy for upper dyspepsia, a very good effect of spasmolytic drugs, gastric secretion inhibitors, and prokinetic agents is emphasised.
Concerning the therapy of lower dyspepsia, the effect and the strategy of treatment with constipating agents and adsorbents as
well as with laxatives are explained. Alternative options of treating functional dyspepsia are also mentioned. The prognosis of patients
with functional dyspepsia is favourable in terms of mortality; however, in more severe cases, it is uncertain in terms of quality of life.
