Alopecia areata (AA) is a non-scarring hair loss disease that affects both children and adults. This condition is common autoimmune disease, the ethiopathogenesis is not fully understood. AA is commonly manifested by well-circumscribed patchy areas of complete hair loss on the scalp and other body parts. In severe cases, alopecia areata can progress to complete loss of all body hair. While not a life threatening condition, alopecia areata is nevertheless serious because of the psychologically and sociologically devastating effects the hair loss can have on the victim. The author deals with the effect of vitamin D on bone as well as other tissues of the human body. The sources of vitamin D intake and production in children are assessed. During periods of time without exposure to sunlight, the organism is dependent on vitamin D intake through food or on its replacement. The currently employed preventive recommendations to supplement vitamin D intake in infants are in accordance with the needs of a child‘s organism. However, there is a question whether these measures are sufficient in the Czech Republic. Further targeted studies will be required to address this issue.

Inflammatory bowel diseases are chronic inflammatory processes, primarily affecting the intestinal mucosa. The chronic course of the disease is characterized by periods of remission alternating with acute flare-ups of the disease. In this paper I decided to outline the problems of the unique existence of the very specific Jewish chemist’s shop – so called Judenapotheke in Prague, whose existence lasted in various forms since the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century. Its exceptionality consisted in the fact, that it – by contrast to other chemist’s shops owned by the Czechs – was not controlled by the Medical Faculty of Prague University.
