PharmDr.Jan Hašek
Lékárna U Matky Boží, Doksy

The present article deals with dexpanthenol as a pharmaceutical substance that is used in the treatment of skin and mucosal conditions and

can be used to prepare medicinal products in a pharmacy. Dexpanthenol is a universal as well as very safe drug being used in otorhinolaryngology

and, in particular, dermatology. The paper describes the properties, mechanism of action and use of dexpanthenol not only as a drug

promoting cellular metabolism, but also deals with the role of the substance as a component of the natural hydrating factor, or moisturizer,

in a wider context during adjuvant therapy for atopic dermatitis. Also, galenic properties and options of incorporating into medicinal products

are described. The last section includes examples of prescriptions intended for extemporaneous preparation in pharmacies. Emphasis

was placed on suitability of the prescriptions corresponding with the current knowledge of the treatment of skin conditions.

Keywords: dexpanthenol, epithelization, atopic dermatitis, moisturizing substance, extemporaneous prescription
