In extemporaneous prescription, titanium dioxide is mainly used as the base of liquid powders and a part of suspension preparations,
such as pastes, creams, and ointments. It has a high covering capacity and a drying effect and alleviates irritation and weeping.
It is a chemically indifferent substance – titanium dioxide can be used as an alternative to zinc oxide in formulations where compounds
of zinc are incompatible with the other ingredients of the preparation. The article briefly deals with the properties and the use of titanium
dioxide in pharmaceutical technology and provides examples of formulations for preparation of pharmaceuticals in pharmacies.
