Constipation in children, diagnosis and treatment

MUDr. Eliška Hloušková
Pediatrická klinika LF MU a FN Brno

Constipation is a common issue addressed in the general paediatrician’s surgery. It is manifested by infrequent, difficult passage of stools. Fromthe clinical perspective, it is important to distinguish organic and functional constipation. Organic constipation is evidenced by numerous warningsigns and any suspicion should result in early referral of the child to a specialist. Functional constipation is much more frequent. It occurs asa result of experience with painful defecation and the fear of it being repeated, with the child resisting defecation actively. The treatment is basedon several simultaneously occurring steps: education, clearing of retained stools, and long-term administration of laxatives. The article deals withthe diagnostic and therapeutic approach to functional constipation adapted according to a new international guideline based on the knowledgeof evidence-based medicine. This guideline was published by the ESPGHAN and NASPGHAN experts in 2014.
