This review is dealing with (1) basic parameters of hyperglycaemic power of food products, (2) various factors influencing the
hyperglycaemic power of food, (3) methods of measurement of classical and extended glycaemic indexes (4) food products with
a low-, medium- and high glycaemic index and (5) input of the glycaemic index in treatment of various diseases and in physical
training. Important references and results of authors´ observations are included.
