Patients suffering from functional gastrointestinal disorders are often seen by their GPs as well as by specialists-gastroenterologists. The estimated incidence in the population is 15–20 % of adolescents and adults, with a higher prevalence in women. In the case of IBS, the patients repeatedly complain of changes in the character of the stools and, commonly, no obvious association can be found. A thorough examination is imperative since one cannot leave out of consideration the fact that a serious organic disease can be detected. The therapy for these diseases is multicomponent. Pharmacotherapy of dyslipidemia is a corner stone of prevention of cardiovascular complications in high-risk patients. Best documented lipid lowering agents are statins being used in monotherapy as well as the core of combination treatment regimens. Fibrates, ezetimibe, resins and (in the Czech Republic still unavailable) niacin represent other treatment options of dyslipidemia. Complex intervention of all lipid abnormalities using combination of different drug classes is a new approach to achieve further reduction of cardiovascular atherothrombotic complications.

Superficial fungal infections are common, particularly dermatophytoses, onychomycoses, and vulvovaginal Candida infections. Most of these mycoses are treated with topical antimycotic drugs unless the infection involves an extensive area or is resistant to initial therapy. The use of griseofulvin in dermatology is limited to a few indications (tinea capitis in children), ketoconazole is replaced by other triazole drugs with a better pharmacological profile (no risk of idiopathic hepatitis) in most indications. Onychomycosis – one of the most difficultto- treat dermatomycosis largely requires systemic therapy with terbinafine or itraconazole...

Rivaroxaban is an oral selective, direct factor Xa inhibitor. It has well predictable pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and is generally well tolerated. Rivaroxaban is used in patients undergoing knee and hip arthroplasty as a prevention of deep vein thrombembolism in the dose 10 mg once daily as long as the risk of venous thromboembolism persists (in elective hip replacements for 5 weeks). In clinical trials, rivaroxaban showed a significant reduction in the incidence of venous thromboembolism as compared with enoxaparin.

Medications are the most commonly used therapeutic means of modern medicine. The studies performed have confirmed that health care provision is burdened with errors. Up to 40 % of damage in hospitalized patients may be related to medications. Therefore, issues concerning safe medication use have increasingly been rightly discussed among both the expert and lay public. Safe medication use is seen as prevention of damaging the patient's health during medication use and includes activities by which medication errors may be avoided, prevented, or corrected.

The powdered rhizome of the ginger plant is a part of some natural products that help to suppress the feeling of nausea during travelling (by car, plane, ship, etc.). These preparations do not induce sleepiness and, therefore, are also suitable for drivers. Their use is not recommended to pregnant women and patients taking anticoagulants and immunosuppressants.
