New recommendations for the treatment of arterial hypertension

MUDr. Filip Málek, Ph.D., MBA

Prakt. lékáren. 2009; 5(3): 114-117

During past decades pharmacotherapy of arterial hypertension underwent significant development. New guidelines for the management of arterial hypertension defined several categories according to the blood pressure levels and blood pressure therapy goals too. Pharmacotherapy of hypertension is guided either by blood pressure level, or the presence of associated clinical condition, the severity of target organ damage and the total cardiovascular risk. The efficacy of the treatment on cardiovascular mortality and morbidity is based on the effect on blood pressure lowering. Effective decrease of blood pressure is provided by: thiazide diuretics, beta-blockers,...

Glaucoma surgery

MUDr. Petr Mlčák, MUDr. Marta Karhanová, FEBO, MUDr. Klára Marešová Ph.D

Prakt. lékáren. 2009; 5(3): 118-123

Glaucoma surgery can be divided into laser, incisional and cyclodestructive. The main goal of glaucoma surgery is to reduce intraocular pressure, the most important risk factor for manifestation and progression of glaucoma. Glaucoma surgery should be indicated when target pressure have not been achieved by medical therapy, visual field or retinal nerve fibre layer loss have increased, or disc cupping have changed. Intolerance of all medical therapy and noncompliance are also suitable for glaucoma surgery.

Prakt. lékáren. 2009; 5(3): 130-134

Effective treatment of chronic pain may significantly improve the quality of life. A brief overview of its mechanisms of origin and of pharmacological treatment options is presented. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the mainstay of treatment of numerous causes of pain. However, they can cause bleeding into the stomach. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors have a lower risk of bleeding than nonselective COX inhibitors; however, they may not be more effective. A therapeutic trial with various NSAIDs may identify an appropriate drug which is most effective in a particular patient. Although physicians are often reluctant to prescribing...

PharmDr. Zbyněk Sklenář Ph.D

Prakt. lékáren. 2009; 5(3): 139-142

The paper is a continuation of the previous paper entitled Pitfalls of individual preparation of medicinal drugs in pharmacies – selected examples I. The twelve formulations presented here are again derived from pharmacy practice and the possible methods of preparation have been tried and tested in the practice. For each prescription, a recommended preparation procedure is described, potential problems or possible incompatibility are explained, and a modification is suggested. In most examples, the preparation only involves selecting an appropriate technological procedure and/or adding a suitable excipient without the need for any major interventions...
