Overview of H1 antihistamines intended not only for seasonal pollen allergy

Novel H1 antihistamines without sedative effects and with reduced side effects represent a major progress in the treatment of allergic conditions (pollinosis, urticaria, eczema, anaphylaxis). They block adverse effects of histamine with their mechanism of action and inhibit the development of allergic inflammation with their immunomodulatory effects, thus having not only therapeutic, but also preventive effect. The types of histamine receptors known to date are mentioned, a terminological note is presented and individual chemical groups of H1 antihistamines are discussed from a pharmaceutical-chemical perspective. Treatment of obesity in patiens with diabetes mellitus: part two

In the first part of the article, there were described the importance of obesity as a risk factor for many serious diseases, different methods of investigation of obese patients and their treatment by lifestyle changes – diet and exercise. The second part deals with other methods of treatment – pharmacotherapy, surgical therapy and psychotherapy. Also the influence of antidiabetic therapy on patient weight is mentioned.

Erectile dysfunction, cardiovascular risk and current treatment options

Czech men (aprox. 54 %) suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED). Erectile dysfunction is defined as an inability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is the first symptom of seriouse diseases, especially cardiovascular ones. Modern oral therapy by PDE 5 inhibitors is safe, effective and well tolerated. The second line therapy is based on intracavernous injections of prostaglandin E 1. ED therapy leeds to achievement partner’s satisfaction and quality of life of inable man.

Treatment of pharmacoresistant epilepsy

The article deals with issues concerning the treatment of pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Pharmacoresistance and pseudopharmacoresistance are defined. The basic principles of use of antiepileptic drugs in clinical practice are briefly discussed and individual antiepileptic drugs and their general role in treating epilepsy are characterized. Surgical treatment is also a part of the treatment algorithm in pharmacoresistant epilepsy.

Oncologic therapy is connected with a number of adverse effects, but it is possible to deal with these effects, moderate their symptoms and at best prevent them. It is important to inform a patient about the adverse effects of the used therapy and the possibilities of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic precautions and ways of prevention. That is just a great opportunity and chance for pharmacists or pharmaceutical assistants.

The extemporaneously prepared pediatric oral liquid dosage forms particularly include aqueous solutions and suspensions. A guarrantee of their stability, the precise dosing, and the appropriate taste are the basic requirements. The choice of pharmaceutical excipients is limited due to their safety for pediatric patients. This review summarizes the excipients suitable in a formulation of the extemporaneously prepared pediatric oral liquids.

Pain therapy in dog and cat

Painful conditions are common therapeutic and ethical issue of veterinary medicine. Dog and cat owners have been coming frequently into pharmacies to buy some analgesics. Not every drug including the Rx drugs are suitable for a dog or a cat. Aim of this paper is to present drugs suitable for pain therapy in dog and cat and those that are inappropriate or even toxic.
