The Czech Republic tops the global list of colorectal carcinoma incidence. Malignancy of the colon is detected in some 3 000 persons annually, while rectal carcinoma is newly diagnosed in 2 500 patients. Early stages of the disease are managed with simple surgical or endoscopic procedures; in the case of advanced disease, anti-tumour chemotherapy and biological therapy are of major importance within multimodal therapy. This paper provides basic information on the cytostatic and biological therapy drugs used.

Oral nutrition supplements are complete mixtures of macronutrients and micronutrients, currently available in liquid ready-to-use forms. Most authors confirm significant increase of energy and nutrient intake during illness by these supplements compared with dietary advice alone, with little suppression of voluntary food intake. Meta-analyses of many randomized studies in various groups of patients give strong evidence in reduction of complications, shortening of hospital stay and in many cases even lowering of mortality. Evidence is the strongest for acute illness, elderly patients, malnutrition and in perioperative care. Oral nutrition supplements...

Sleep is an integral part of human life. It comprises almost one-third of our lives. Numerous animal experiments have shown that sleep deprivation leads to a general deterioration of all body functions, decreases performance and learning ability, and causes neurological difficulties. Sleep responds to physiological or pathological changes in the organism very sensitively. Physiological changes particularly include pregnancy and ageing. Pathological changes affecting sleep include a wide range of mental, neurological, and somatic conditions (e. g., depression, bronchial asthma, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease). At pharmacies and GP surgeries, patients...

Glaucoma is a chronic, progressive, irreversible optic neuropathy. Glaucoma management involves conservative, laser, and surgical treatment. Conservative treatment consists in using eye drops containing antiglaucoma agents on a regular daily basis. These include prostaglandin analogues and prostamide, beta blockers, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, alpha-2 agonists, parasympathomimetics, their fixed combinations, and hyperosmotic agents. The main goal of glaucoma treatment is to preserve sufficient visual function while minimizing the impact on the quality of life of patients.

Preparations with Echinacea plant extracts are very popular and are particularly used as immune stimulants to treat and prevent viral and bacterial respiratory tract infections. Their use may induce allergic reactions or may interfere with CYP 3A4 isoenzyme responsible for drug metabolism. Long-term use of Echinacea preparations may even lead to liver damage.
