Modern dressing materials offered by the pharmaceutical industry today have been developed based on the recent knowledge of wound healing. Chronic daily headache (CDH) represents a heterogenous group including both primary and secondary headaches resulting from various organic causes. Primary CDH results from chronification of migraine, tension headache or cluster headache. It is often associated with overuse of analgetics or other acute medications, or with depression and anxiety. Treatment depends on the underlying type of headache and present complications. Currently, a wide range of methods and formulations of hormonal contraception are commercially available which are similarly reliable, safe and tolerated. Thus, there are efforts to develop formulations with additional beneficial properties. The reduction in the dose of the oestrogen component has stopped at 15 μg of ethinylestradiol, a predominant oestrogen component until recently. Not long ago, an alternative in the form of natural estradiol, or estradiol valerate, was introduced in a combined oral contraceptive (COC). Poor cycle control, the limiting factor thus far, has been overcome by the combination with new gestagens. In the gestagen...

The article informs about Victoza (liraglutid) which is a glucagon-like-peptid-1 analogue (GLP1). It is used to treat patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 with insufficient compensation of diabetes during metformin and/or derivates of sulfonylurey or metformin and thiazolidindion therapy. Liraglutid stimulates the insulin secretion depending upon the concentration of glucose in blood and reduces an incorrectly high secretion of glucagon. Liraglutid also reduces body weight and the amount of body fat thanks to the suppression of the feeling of hunger and reduction of energy intake. The treatment with Victoza leads to a significant improvement...

Promethazine hydrochloride is a well-known and long-established antihistamine with a variety of other pharmacological effects for which it is currently used more than for its basic indication of an H1 antihistamine. Since it is, when appropriate, still used mainly in paediatric patients and since the only dosage form of monocomponent products available in the market is that of a film-coated tablet, which does not allow for proper splitting when a lower dose is prescribed, it is desirable that the medicinal substance itself be available for extemporaneous use. It has been available for pharmacies since September 2010. The review article provides...

Recurrent herpes simplex infection is not among the most serious infections; however, it is particularly troublesome in terms of social and aesthetic aspects. Since the herpes virus cannot be eliminated from an already infected organism, the treatment of recurrent herpes simplex infection has to focus on facilitating the symptoms and alleviation of associated symptoms. Compresses, pastes, antiseptic agents, antiviral drugs, biostimulation lasers and other methods may be used in the treatment. At a time when the WHO puts an emphasis on every individual’s responsibility for their health, self-medication can be considered a positive part of an individual’s health behaviour. Diarrhoea and constipation are common symptoms for which the patients visit a pharmacy during self-medication.
