Currently, not only original polysaccharide vaccines but also new conjugated vaccines are available for use against meningococcal infections. Since both types have their place in the market, the question is raised as to when to use which vaccine. A major selection criterion is the required reliability of protection after a particular vaccine, which is largely dependent upon the age of the person vaccinated.

The paper aims to briefly and clearly describe the treatment options for inflammatory rheumatic diseases and to highlight the most common adverse drug effects. Currently, both the so-called disease-modifying drugs and biological drugs are used to treat these conditions. However, nonsteroidal antirheumatics, analgesics, and glucocorticoids are also an integral part of pharmacotherapy. Due to frequent multimorbidity in patients, it is not always easy to prescribe a proper combination of drugs which, in a particular patient, would be the most beneficial.

Current pharmacotherapeutic approaches are presented which are used in the treatment of Alzheimer‘s disease as the most common type of dementia, and of related dementias. Only two approaches are evidence-based: the use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and that of memantine. The other approaches are rather of supplementary importance. Novel approaches that are currently under investigation are also mentioned some of which will likely be used in clinical practice. The paper deals with the so-called cognitive pharmacotherapy, not with the pharma- cotherapy used in behavioural, emotional, and sleep disorders that accompany the dementia syndrome....

Biological therapeutics (biotherapeutics) are drugs or potential drugs obtained by other methods than chemical synthesis or isolation of substances, i. e. of chemical entities, from plant (biological) material. Biological therapeutics are mostly obtained by recombinant technology: therapeutic monoclonal antibodies, new type vaccines, therapeutic proteins as well as combined drugs, usually consisting of a controlling component, therapeutic component, and various drug carriers. Biotherapeutics are sometimes defined as drugs that are not small molecules mostly referred to as chemical therapeutics.

Ranibizumab (Lucentis®, Novartis) is a recombinant humanized fragment of a monoclonal antibody against vascular endothelial growth factor. It is administered by intraocular injection into the vitreous humour. It is indicated for treatment of the wet form of age-related macular degeneration. It is produced in Escherichia coli cells using recombinant DNA technology.

The Association of Veterinarians was established in 1920. Its primary purposes were to support literary activity of veterinarians, take charge of publishing the journal „Zvěrolékařský obzor“ (Veterinary Horizon), and arrange the purchase of drugs and sanitary goods for veterinary purposes. In 1937, the association started producing its own drugs and became one of the major manufacturers and distributors of veterinary drugs in the then Czechoslovak Republic. It was also engaged in publishing. In 1948, the association was nationalized and, in 1951, all its activities ceased completely.
